Seasons Restrained Collection

The Seasons Restrained Collection brings together handcrafted stoneware bonsai pots shaped by a journey through Japan. Rooted in simplicity, balance and quiet harmony commonly found in Japanese daily life.

The collection explores how thoughtful form, restrained colour and considered detail creates a lasting relationship between pot and tree.

The Background

Seasons Restrained was the third collection developed by Ian Jobling Ceramics, establishing the design principles that continue to guide his work. Handcrafted in stoneware in Durham, UK, the collection is built around considered proportions, consistent foot design and carefully developed rim and crown profiles.

Each element has a purpose. Forms are designed to provide a balanced foundation for the tree, while surfaces and colours remain deliberately restrained. The result is a collection of Japanese inspired pots in which simplicity does not mean a lack of detail, but a careful consideration of what belongs.

The Inspiration

The inspiration for Seasons Restrained comes from Japanese gardens, ceramics and architecture, where simplicity, balance and the relationship between objects and their surroundings are fundamental

A journey through Japan will deepen this exploration, offering the opportunity to study the materials, forms and traditions that have shaped Japanese ceramics and bonsai culture. The collection reflects my interest in natural textures, quiet spaces and the beauty found in things that are carefully consider rather than overstated.

These influences are expressed through proportion, silhouette and a restrained palette of colours and finishes, allowing the pot to complement the tree rather than trying to compete with it.

Pot shapes and sizes

Standard shapes include round, oval, rectagonal, hexagonal, quince, cascade and semi-cascade. Sizes are available for Mame, Shohin and larger.

Individual character

Every pot in the Seasons Restrained Collection is handcrafted individually, yet each follows a shared design language. Consistent foot proportions, carefully developed rims and crowns and considered silhouettes create a sense of continuity across different shapes and sizes.

The individuality comes through the relationship between form, colour and finish. Subtle variations give each pot its own character, while the restrained surfaces allow the trees trunk, bark and canopy to remain the focus.

The intention is to create pots that feel quietly assured, functional ceramic forms with enough character to complement the tree and enough restraint to let it speak for itself.

Crown design

Three crown designs are available to suit both masculine and feminine tree forms. The wide crown gives a sense of strength to the design and suits trees such as Scots pine and Mountain pine, while the angled crowns are more elegant and suit Japanese maples and fruiting trees.

Japanese culture has long offered a way of seeing the world where less is not emptiness but essential.

Through my study of Japanese gardens, craft and ceramics, I have been drawn to the beauty of restraint and harmony found in natural materials and simple forms.

Seasons Restrained is the first collection shaped by those ideas, and my forthcoming journey through Japan will deepen that exploration.

“Restraint is not the absence of beauty”.

“It is the removal of things that don’t belong”.

The Beauty of Restraint.

Restraint is not about taking away. It is about keeping only what is necessary for harmony to emerge.

HARMONY

Every element exists in balance.

The image is a black and white cartoon character with a rounded body, large round eyes with a small dot in each for pupils, a small nose, and a smiling mouth. The character has short arms and legs with three fingers on each hand and three toes on each foot. It appears to be happy and friendly, with a simple and cute design.

THE MIDDLE WAY

Finding beauty by avoiding excess.

STILLNESS

Quiet that allows the tree to speak.

It is balance…. It is space…

It is respect—for the tree, the craft, and the seasons.

Lessons in Simplicity.

In Japanese gardens, ceramics and architecture, the same quiet principles appear—whether in a moss garden, a tea bowl or a humble doorway.

These ideas have shaped every decision made in the design of this collection.
